Beskrivelse
Calligraphy from the World of Islam.
Calligraphy is considered one of the most important art forms in the Islamic world. After the spread of Islam in the 7th century, calligraphy became a central political marker and a unifying factor across geographical, ethnic, and linguistic boundaries. The religion's limited use of figurative art elevated calligraphy and further cemented its significance. Therefore, calligraphy can be found throughout Islamic history on items ranging from tools, ceramics, textiles, to facades.
'Beyond Words' is based on an upcoming exhibition at The David Collection. The chapters describe various aspects of the tradition, from the development of the Arabic alphabet to the calligrapher's work and its many applications in both official and everyday contexts.
