An enchanting introduction to the Moomin world and its timeless message of kindness and inclusion.

In The Moomins and the Great Flood, Tove Jansson invites readers into the magical world of Moominvalley with her very first tale about the beloved characters. The story begins as Moomintroll, Moominmamma, and Sniff come across a beautiful valley and a distinctive blue house that looks like a tall stove. This house, the iconic Moominhouse, stands as a symbol of warmth and welcome, where any stranger is invited in with open arms.

Originally published in Finland in 1945, the story follows the trio as they journey through forests and rising waters, searching for the missing Moominpappa and a place they can call home. Along the way, they encounter a variety of charming characters including Hemulens, stranded kittens, and the blue-haired Tulippa, adding magic and adventure to their quest.

Written in the aftermath of World War II, this children’s tale subtly reflects the experiences of displaced refugees across Europe, making its message of kindness and inclusiveness especially poignant. In anticipation of the Moomins’ eightieth anniversary in 2025, this edition shines a spotlight on the original story that introduced the world to Moominvalley.

This new edition also features an introduction by the beloved author Frank Cottrell-Boyce and includes a full-colour fold-out poster detailing the rich history of the Moomins, making it a perfect celebration of Tove Jansson’s enduring creation.
