Jan Gehl's classic from 1971 has been translated into many languages, including Chinese and Japanese. The book is still the best source for understanding the use of outdoor space and life in our cities. It is basic literature at many architecture schools worldwide and still stands unchallenged as the most basic introduction to the interaction of outdoor environments with social life. The book has most recently been published in the sixth Danish edition. In the spring of 2007, Jan Gehl received the NL Høyen medal for his exceptional efforts for the human city.
