Oprindeligt udgivet i april 1997, First Rays Of The New Rising Sun var det første album udarbejdet under direkte opsyn af Hendrix-familien. Ved at samle sytten sange, hvis skabelse strækker sig fra marts 1968 til Jimis sidste sessioner i Electric Lady Studios i august 1970, markerede albummet den sidste yndefulde gestus af den innovative kunstner Jimi Hendrix.
