Beskrivelse
On his 250th birthday in 2024, the renowned German visual artist Caspar David Friedrich is celebrated as one of the most influential and original Romantic painters. Educated at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Friedrich is honored with a new book exploring his unique significance for Danish and International art. Early in his career, Friedrich — like his teachers and peers — was inspired by European Pre-Romantic movements.
He later developed an original Romantic painting style, which in turn became an inspiration at the Academy.
This influence grew especially prominent in the 1980s, as painting experienced a revival in Europe and the USA. Academy instructors and students alike became engaged in Friedrich’s interpretations of infinite space and his use of colour to evoke presence and spatial depth, suggesting new ways of perceiving life.
In the following decades, interest in Friedrich’s work continued in diverse ways. His originality and challenge to traditional art concepts became especially clear through studies comparing Friedrich’s and Danish Golden Age painters’ treatments of space and colouristic effects.
